CMS
Academy for Communication and Convergence Studies was launched in
August 2009. It runs a post-graduate diploma programme on Strategic
Communication. The focus of this programme is to give hands on training
to young graduates in socially relevant research in media studies.
This uniquely designed programme exposes the students to media
technologies but sensitizes them to the social issues around education,
health, children and women welfare, marginalized sections of the
society and accountability and transparency in the instruments of
governance at national and international levels. In fact it has
been the core strength of the two-decade old centre for media Studies
that has earned a name for itself in this field. Thus the PG course
is a natural extension of the CMS achievements.
The course is divided in three ten-week trimesters with seven subjects
each. The last semester will be dedicated to the individual sectoral
preference of students like social, developmental, corporate, market
or convergence. Besides an experienced core faculty, the CMS Academy
has drawn upon the expertise of the senior professors from Jawaharlal
Nehru University, Jamia Millia, Delhi University and the media industry.
Saturdays are devoted to workshops where the students extend their
theoretical learning to the practical contours.
The faculty performance is judged both by the internal faculty
and the performance appraisal feedback given by the students to
maintain complete and satisfaction of the students. Students are
given study material in advance by the faculty and are expected
to prepare themselves for the class to discuss the inherent issues
in the topic. The faculty then responds to the queries raised by
students and clears their confusion in the process. This pedagogy
makes the programme different from other media schools.
Students are involved in the on going live research projects of
the CMS in the fields of environment, health, media content analysis
and market research in the second half of the day. The first half
is devoted to classroom teaching which is predominantly interactive
in style and content.
Students bring out a daily wall paper with inputs from their learning,
field work and research work. They also participate in the CMS workshops
on media related subjects, film festivals, seminars, conferences,
exhibitions and book fairs.
Lastly, the CMS Academy has launched a Communication Research Group
to help research scholars while pursuing their PhD with the help
of seasons PhD guides from established universities. It has attracted
more than 50 research scholars.
