The
India Habitat Centre was conceived to provide a physical environment
which would serve as a catalyst for a synergetic relationship between
individuals and institutions working in diverse habitat related
areas and therefore, maximise their total effectiveness. To facilitate
this interaction, the Centre provides a range of facilities. It’s
aim is to develop an integrated physical environment in which various
professions and institutions dealing with different facets of habitat
and habitat related environmental issues would function, interact
and attempt to resolve habitat related problems in a coordinated
manner.
The centre promotes awareness in regard to habitat-related environmental
issues including water, air, noise and waste pollution, energy and
its conservation, water and human waste management and other such
matters. It also works towards promoting better urban and rural
settlements relevant of the Indian social, cultural and economic
context and related to the lifestyle of its people. Better awareness
and sensitivity in regard to all aspects of creative human activity
including the significance of art in habitat can be seen in the
various installations at the centre, and the art galleries it houses.
The centre also documents all relevant information pertaining to
habitat, human settlements and environmental issues. It also advises
and if needed, assists the government in the formation and implementation
of policies relating to habitat, and human settlements. It also
organises and promotes conferences, seminars, lectures, public debates
and exhibitions in matters relating to habitat, human settlements
and environment.
The centre offers various awards, prizes scholarships and stipends
in furtherance of its objectives. Sharing a common concern for habitat,
the following organisations have come together to participate in
an exciting venture of institution-building, evolving a unique equation
of synergy within the India Habitat Centre complex — All India
Housing Development Association, Centre for Development Studies
& Activities (CDSA), Centre for Science & Environment, Confederation
of Indian Industry, Council for Advancement of People's Action &
Rural Technology, Housing Development Finance Corporation Ltd.,
International Labour Organisation, National Capital Region - Planning
Board, among other such institutions and offices. The centre is
open to collaborate with other national and international institutions
in furtherance of its objectives. In keeping with its objectives,
the Habitat Centre, is, this year also, playing host to the CMS
VATAVARAN Film Festival (Competitive) 2009.
