UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, contributes to the building of peace, the alleviation of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue, through its work in education, natural sciences, social and human sciences, culture, communication and information.

Activity areas in India
Education: Developing policies, capacities and tools for quality education for all and lifelong learning as well promoting education for sustainable development.

Natural Sciences: Fostering of policies, technical capacity building, national and regional research and innovative systems, use of technologies, scientific networking and international cooperation to enhance societal responses in the fields of water, ecological and earth sciences.

Social and Human Sciences: Within the broad framework of Enhancing the research-policy linkages relevant to social transformations, SHS main focus in India is dual: 1) building national capacities of city professionals in revitalization of historic urban areas in India and developing and disseminating good practices on social integration in urban settings; and 2) Promoting policy dialogue and building capacities in the formulation of social policies through a South Asian Ministerial platform of exchange.

Culture: Identification and implementation of model examples linking cultural resources, creativity and local empowerment in the areas of heritage — both tangible and intangible — museums, cultural tourism and crafts, in response to the priorities of the Government of India.

Communication and Information: Promotion of the free flow of ideas by word and image, universal and equitable access to information and the strengthening of communication and information capacities, so as to empower communities and citizens and to enable them to participate effectively in the democratic process.
