Given the ever-increasing threats that both wildlife and sensitive cultures face from the onslaught of industrialization, it seems timely to initiate a dialogue on the future of conservation and attempt to bridge the gap between conservation and linked livelihoods. The challenge is to seek innovative approaches to conservation taking into consideration the communities' needs and look at how livelihoods can be made more sustainable. Panelists will deliberate on these issues and share with audience their experiences in working on successful models to achieve the twin objectives of conservation and livelihood security.

The Indian National Parks and other protected areas have an unique status worldwide. It has the second largest base of bio diversity in the world. India's wildlife sanctuaries and protected areas, which cover roughly about 90,000 sq km, house more than 500 species of mammals, over 2000 species of birds, over 500 species of reptiles and amphibians and around 30000 species of insects!
On the flip side, however, the existing policies (framed few decades before) make it almost unviable for the wildlife filmmakers and conservationist to document and film species diversity or behaviour or environmental issues. The time is now ripe to review these policies, update them and also make a national level policy. In this panel discussion, ace wildlife filmmakers and conservationist come together to share their experiences and difficulties of shooting in protected areas and brainstorm to come up with revised policies. The same would be submitted to the concerned authorities for consideration.
