CMS VATAVARAN 2007 film festival attracted unprecedented number of 275 entries and 72 films were nominated.
The entries received were subjected to a stringent, rigorous and transparent 2-tier selection process consisting of the Nomination Jury and Final Jury.
A 25-member Nomination Jury met for three days from July 11-13 at CMS, New Delhi for selection of potential winners. Six subgroups were formed and each of these sub-groups had a Chairperson and subject and visual medium experts. The subgroups watched the films entries in a respective category and nominated productions.
The members were from diverse backgrounds (environment, wildlife and visual media) and organizations such as BNHS, National Geography Channel, ICRISAT, NID, Satyajit Ray Film Insititute, IIMC, MCRC, WWF, TERI, DA, The Hindu, Indian Express, AUSAID, Children Film Institute, Action Aid, FIIT etc.Dr. K P Jayasankar, Professor and Chair, Centre for Media and Cultural Studies, TISS, Mumbai, chaired the Nomination Jury.
A 5-member Final Jury, chaired by noted filmmaker, Mr. Shyam Benegal, selected the winners from nominated films in Indian categories. While Ashish Kothari, noted conservationist chaired the International Categories Jury 2007.
The parameters for selection were content, social relevance, creativity in treatment, presentation, authenticity, accuracy, technical excellence, educational value and motivational elements.
Apart from Nomination and Final Juries for both the India and international categories, Festival 2007 saw two other Juries, namely the Jury for Forum of Environmental Journalists of India (FEJI)- CMS Academy Young Environmental (Print and Broadcast) Journalist Award and TVE Asia Pacific TV News Stories Award which met during the festival to decide the winners in their respective categories.
