The Silent Valley can be described as the Valley of life. She is silent, remote and irresistibly charming... It is one of the richest expressions of life on earth. The Silent Valley is a symbol of conservation and perhaps the first ever significant victory for the conservation movement in India. The Save Silent Valley Campaign in the mid 1970s was against the Government of Kerala's decision to build a hydro electric power project in these pristine forests. Heeding to international pressure the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi intervened to halt the project. Though the Silent Valley was declared a National park by Rajiv Gandhi in 1984, it still is under threat with the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) reviving the project. It remains to be seen whether the Silent Valley, the last and most precious wet evergreen belt in the Western Ghats and one of the 18 ecological hot spots in the world, survives the axe!
