Summary: Indian Wild Life Conservation Act, 1972 envisages among other things that indulging in the trade of Indian Birds and encaging them is a cognizable offence; even making them a pet is prohibited under the law, but thanks to indifferent attitude of the Department of Forest and the Police administration turning a blind eye, there is an exclusively Birds Trading Bazaar called Nakkhas, flourishing no where but in the state capital, Lucknow itself, where a host of birds are put on a large scale sale/ purchase. Doordarshan Lucknow has mounted this programme titled ‘Illegal Trade of Indian Birds’ in order to focus the attention of the people belonging to all walks of life, who are in a way responsible for this trend. Besides this, the programme has also attempted to make the society as a whole aware of the dangers related to the confusion and blindly following irrational traditions prevailing in the society, as also the bright aspects of wild life conservation.
